The Information Society and Media DG supports the development and use of information and communications technologies for the benefits of the EU citizens. It defines and implements regulatory framework for e.g. communication and audiovisual technologies and content industries. Emphasis is on fostering competition and letting the market decide on technology.

Education and Culture DG
works to build a Europe of knowledge, develops the European cultural area and promotes citizens’ involvement in European integration. In addition to policy and regulatory action, the DG implements a wide variety of EU programmes in this field involving hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries every year.
