The Commissioners and their Spokespersons

José Manuel Barroso

President of the Commission, appointed by the governments of the member states and approved by the European Parliament. He works to provide forward movement for the EU and to give a sense of direction both to his fellow commissioners and to the commission as a whole. The President also represents the European commission in meetings of the European Council, in dealings with other EU institutions and to the rest of the world. He has been very active in the fields of growth and jobs, energy and climate change, among others.
